Former UFC bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw has been suspended for two years by the U.S. Anti-Doping for testing positive for EPO prior to his January 19th flyweight title fight with Henry Cejudo. Dillashaw was knocked out in the first round. The two-year suspension is the harshest possible that can be levied by the agency and is retroactive back to January 18th, the day the test was submitted.
EPO is actually recombinant human erythropoietin which gained infamy in the 90s during the long distance biking scandals. It’s an extremely effective peptide hormone that is only available in injection for and increases red blood cells which increases the amount of oxygen transported through the body increasing stamina and performance. As far as the seriousness of PED violations go, EPO is at or near the top of the list.
