The NY Yankees were not players in the Manny Machado and Bryce Harper sweepstakes but they were busy locking up their own young players. The Bombers extended “ace” Luis Severino for four years earlier this month and Sunday signed outfielder Aaaron Hicks to a club friendly seven-year $70 million dollar deal. The 29-year-old Hicks had signed a one-year, $6 million dollar deal earlier this month to avoid arbitration. The new deal starts this year and locks Hicks up through 2015 with the club holding a 2026 $12.5 dollar option.
Hicks has been a top center fielder over the past two year and comes off a career best 27 homers in 2018. Hicks, generally regarded by experts as one the more underrated players in baseball, also stole 21 bases. His WAR (wins against replacement) trails only Mike Trout and Lorenzo Cain and is higher than Astro George Springer. Cain, 31, recently signed a five-year deal with Milwaukee worth $16 million per year so so Hicks deal would appear to be a bargain.
