It was a strange day for the Minnesota T-Wolves on Sunday, first beating the Lakers 108-86 in a rare afternoon matinee game and then firing head coach and team president Tom Thibodeau. Long time assistant coach Ryan Saunders, son of the late Flip Saunders, takes over as the interim coach. It’s been a tumultuous year for Thibodeau and the team which made the playoffs for the first time in 14 years, last year
The season started star shooting guard Jimmy Butler demanding a trade in training camp. Thibodeau did not want to deal Butler but after the team got off to a 4-9 start, Tibs relented and sent the disgruntled Butler to Philadelphia. The Wolves have won six of nine and are now 19-21 and currently sit just two games out of the final playoff spot in the ultra-competitive Western Conference. Thibodeau has an abrasive personality but the timing of the firing is unusual to say the least.
