For the second time in three years, the Clemson Tigers are college football’s National Champions after dominating Alabama 44-16 Monday night at Levi Stadium, in Santa Clara, California. The Tigers used turnovers, big plays on offense, and a suffocating defense to win easily in a game that was never really in doubt. Clemson led 31-16 at the half before blanking the Tide 13-0 in the final 30 minutes and lock up the school’s third football championship.
Freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence was brilliant in throwing for 347 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. Bama counterpart Tua Tagliovoa, the Heisman Trophy runner-up, was contained and frustrated most of the night, throwing two interceptions (one pick-six) that ultimately resulted in 14 Clemson points. The other turning point of the game was the ability of Clemson to convert on third down where the Tigers went 10-15 for 255 yards in those conversions.
It was a good but not great night for most books with the Clemson and over result. The game opened Alabama -6 and 59.5/60. Early Clemson money took the Tigers down to the dead numbers of +5 or +5.5. Late money was bet on the Bama side and money-line. Money on the under had the closing number at 56.5 or 57 at most houses. Excellent handle and several key prop wins also helped give the decision to the books.
