The Monday after the NFL regular season is affectionately known as “Black Monday” where traditionally 3-5 and sometimes more NFL head coaches as given their walking papers. The NY Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn’t even wait until Monday telling Todd Bowles and Dirk Kotter their services were no longer required. The Jets finished 4-12 after getting pummeled 38-3 at New England. The Bucs dropped a tough 34-32 home decision to finish 5-11 for the season.
Bowles was 24-40 in four years with Gang Green. He was a much sought after defensive coordinator before taking the Flyboy job in 2015. He won 10 games in his first season but was the victim of poor drafts and the front office dismantling the club. Dirk Koetter took over for Lovie Smith three years ago, ostensibly to mentor top draft pick Jameis Winston. That never happened as the ex-Florida State star continued to have off the field problems and the Bucs have only managed top go 19-29 with Winston as the trigger man.
