In most other years, reaching the finals of Wimbledon and the U.S. Open would be considered an off year for Serena Williams. This year however was a very special year for the thirty-seven-year-old “Queen of Center Court” who was named AP Female Athlete of the Year on Wednesday for the fifth time. It was actually a remarkable year for Serena to return to tennis after life threatening complications from a difficult child birth in late 2018. Serena received 93 points from ballots by U.S. journalists and news editors to beat out gymnast Simone Biles who was second with 68 points. Notre Dame basketball player Arike Ogunbowale, snowboarder Chloe Kim, and swimmer Katie Ledecky rounded out the top five.
