Just three hours after an embarrassing 20-17 home loss to the 3-9 Arizona Cardinals, the Green Bay Packers have fired head coach Mike McCarthey. Green Bay is 4-7-1, 0-6 on the road, and there has been reported friction between McCarthy and franchise quarterback Aaron Rodgers for the last several years. The Packers were a 14-point favorite over Arizona who had not won in Green Bay since 1949.
McCarthy, who was the second longest tenured coach after Bill Belechick, finishes with a record of 125-77-2 in 13 seasons where the team made the playoffs nine times (10-8 in the playoffs) and won the Super Bowl in 2010. Only Curly Lambeau, the team’s original head coach had a longer run with the team. Offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, who coached the Dolphins between 2012-2015, will take over on an interim basis.
