“Funky” Ben Askren will make his highly anticipated UFC debut at UFC 233 on January 26, 2019 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Askren will face former welterweight champion Robbie Lawlor (28-12, 1 ND) in the co-main event that also has UFC flyweight champion Henry Cejudo taking on two-time bantamweight champion C.J. Dillashaw.
The 34-year-old Askren is a two-time NCAA wrestling champion, 2008 Olympian, and an Olympic class Freestyle world champion. He’s 18-0 (1 no contest) and is an enigmatic fan favorite that marches to the beat of his own drum. He’s refused to be bullied by bad contracts offered by the UFC in the past and has been content to clean out his weight classes in Bellator and One fighting.
Askren is a successful businessman outside the ring and retired in September of 2017 while leaving the option of returning if he could work out a deal with the UFC. In October, Askren signed with the UFC after a pseudo-trade that sent former flyweight kingpin but continual malcontent Demetrious Johnson to One fighting in return.
