With sixty-nine percent of Floridians voting yes, Florida has passed Amendment 13 which bans greyhound racing by the year 2020. The passage of the amendment effectively shuts the doors of 11 greyhound track across Florida, more tracks than the rest US combined. Track operators will be able to keep their gaming licenses and convert to poker rooms and have slot machines if they comply by 2019.
Greyhound racing was a thriving industry as recently as 20 years ago with an overall handle in the US of more than two billion dollars. The sport has run afoul of animal rights activists and Florida becomes the 41st state to outlaw greyhound racing. There are currently more than 8000 registered racing greyhounds in the US.
