  • JEFF ALLEN ANALYZES NFL TRADE DEADLINE DEALS

Jeff Allen on October 31, 2018

WR Golden Tate from the Lions to the Eagles for a 3rd round pick

This is an excellent pick up for the Eagles with similar implications to the Jay Ajayi deal of last year. Clearly a rental, the 30-year-old Tate is a sure handed veteran and another dependable weapon for QB Carson Wentz. Tate has caught 63% of his targeted passes, a good number but his lowest since 2011. A change of scenery might do him so good and going to a contender might just light a fire. In the Eagles can’t re-sign him, Tate figures to still get paid by someone else and the Eagles would get a 3rd or 4th round compensatory draft pick in 2020. Great deal.

DE Dante Fowler from the Jaguars to the Rams for a 3rd round

Another excellent deal for all involved. Fowler was the third overall pick in 2015 and never quite made an impact in Jacksonville. His time was up with Jags in the final year of his rookie deal and he’ll be playing for a contract with a team that desperately needs an end rusher and could wind up going to a Super Bowl. Being on a defensive line that features, Donald, Suh, and Brockers takes the heat off. Ram DC Wade Phillips will put him in the best spot to do what he does best.

WR Demaryius Thomas from the Denver Broncos to the Texans for a 4th round pick and swap 7th rounders

Good trade for Thomas and the Texans. Thought the Broncos probably should have gotten more. Thomas was being wasted in Denver, weighted by a litany of quarterbacks unable to get him the ball. He’ll get his chances with rifle armed DeShaun Watson and will bookend Deandre Hopkins, effectively taking the place of Will Fuller who tore his ACL and is out for the year. The Texans and Broncos meet this week. Denver doesn’t get much more than PR points as they trade a fan favorite to a contender rather than ignominiously release him in the off-season.
