UFC 229 ended as expected with Khabib Nurmagomedov dominating Conor McGregor for 15+ minutes, finally finishing the Irishman with a rear naked choke, but the night will be remembered for the post-fight brawled that ensued. Nurmagomedov used his superior grappling skills for three rounds to neutralize the striking power of the hard hitting McGregor and pretty much having his way after taking McGregor to the mat. The 27-0 “Eagle” took down McGregor early in the fourth round, got his back, and forced the former two-division champion to tap out after applying a rear naked choke.
Mayhem ensued when Khabib stood over McGregor yelling at him. Nurmagomedov then leapt over the cage to attack the McGregor camp to insite a full-out brawl in the crowd. As security tried to intervene, the Khabib camp attacked McGregor and sucker punched him before UFC officials could separate the camps.
There had been bad blood between the camps for months with McGregor continuously insulting Khabib’s religion, homeland, and family. In April, Khabib slapped McGregor friend and training partner Artim Lobov in a hotel prior to UFC 223 in Brooklyn. McGregor traveled from Ireland the next day and attacked a bus containing Khabib and other UFC fighters. McGrego threw a luggage dolly through the bus window, injuring several fighters, some who were eventually unable to fight on the UFC 223 card.
What should have been the crowning achievement for what is the most dominant fighter in MMA history might now lead to legal action, possible suspension, and possibly the stripping of his title. To the surprise of nobody, a rematch is already in the works.
