The US women continued their dominance of international basketball by defeating Australia 73-56 Sunday to capture their third straight FIBA World Cup. The US has now gone undefeated in World Cup and Olympic play for 12 years, last losing to Russia in the semi-finals of the 2006 World Cup. Britney Griner led the way for the US with 15 points with veteran Sue Bird adding 13. Griner was also the star on the defensive end holding Aussie center Liz Cambage to just seven points. Cambage had led the tournament in scoring at better than 27 points-per-game.
The Aussies were never in the game, falling behind 10-0 at the start. The US lead 35-27 at the half and then scored the first nine points of the third quarter to seal the deal. Breanna Stewart scored 10 points in the win and named the tournament MVP to go along with her WNBA season and finals MVP. The US in now 18-0 versus Australia in international competitions. Australia’s silver was the best they’ve finished since the won in 2006. Spain beat Belgium 67-60 in the third place game to take the bronze.
