Placed in a similar situation to Nick Saban in having to choose a starting quarterback, Dabo Sweeney has pulled the trigger and named five-star true freshman Trevor Lawrence as his starting quarterback Saturday versus Syracuse. Sweeney chose Lawrence over incumbent starter Kelly Bryant, Lawrence is clearly the better passer of the two and it is unclear at the point whether Bryant will see time or whether the job belongs to Lawrence.
The situation has been brewing since summer camp when Bryant barely won the job. Lawrence was the most highly rated dual threat coming out of high school last year and raised some eyebrows by signing with Clemson. Both quarterbacks have played and played well. Lawrence is completing 65% of his passes with nine touchdowns and two picks; Bryant has completed 67% of his passes but for only two touchdowns and a pick. Bryant is the superior runner of the two but not by any significant margin. Lawrence has a QBR of 191.83 while Bryant’s is 146.90.
