As if things weren’t going bad enough for San Francisco while getting hammered by the Chiefs Sunday in Kansas City, an ill-advised judgement call by 49er franchise quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has left his own and the 49er season in doubt. Trailing 38-20 with 5:35 left in the game, 3rd-and-goal from the 20, Garoppolo scrambled down the sideline for a 13-yard gain before being confronted with having to step out of bounds or take a hit from Kansas City corner Steve Nelson at the seven. Garoppolo appeared to take an awkward step before getting hit and immediately crumpling to the ground.
Garoppolo was given medical treatment on the field and eventually limped to the sidelines before being taken away in cart soon after. The preliminary diagnosis of a torn ACL will be confirmed today by MRI and other testing. Garoppolo was in his third game after signing a whopping five-year $137.5 million dollar contract over the summer, $74 million of which was guaranteed. Garoppolo was 20-30 for 257 yards and two touchdowns before going down. Chiefs, 49ers, fans, and talking heads alike wonder if wouldn’t have just been prudent to step out of bounds and fight another day.
