Despite winning two division titles and better than 50% of the games that he has managed, Jeff Bannister has been fired as the manager of the Texas Rangers. The Rangers were 64-88 under Bannister this year and in last place in the American League West. In his four year in Arlington, Bannister finishes up 325-313 and 2-6 in the playoffs. Bannister was named American League Manager of the Year after the 2015 season.
The two leading contenders to replace Bannister appear to be Sandy Alomar Jr. and former Ranger Carlos Beltran. Sandy Alomar Jr. has been on the short list of managerial candidates for almost a decade. He’s is from the Tony Francona managerial tree, bilingual, and could be a good fit with the Rangers young latino players. Carlos Beltran has been retired one year but along with being a great player, he was always considered to be an excellent mentor to young players and was thought to be the second choice for the Yankee job behind Aaron Boone.
