Week two was a tough week in the NFL for kickers, toughest of all was the 0-3 performance by the Viking’s Daniel Carlson who missed a 35-yard chippie on the final play of overtime in Minnesota’s 29-29 tie at Green Bay. Carlson was harshly criticized in Viking HC Mike Zimmer’s post-game presser and Monday, was looking for work. Minnesota has signed veteran free agent Dan Bailey, the second most accurate placekicker in NFL history to put the kicking problems to bed for good.
The Viking’s really liked Carlson and even moved up in the draft to take him in the fifth in this year’s draft. The Vikings, who are expected to challenge for the Super Bowl this year, saw all they wanted to see when Carlson missed two game winners in overtime. Bailey, has a lifetime 81% FG conversion rate, second in NFL history to the Baltimore Ravens Justin Tucker. Bailey, who was scheduled to make $3.4 million with Dallas this year, was a surprise cap hit at the end of training camp as the Cowboys trimmed their roster to 53.
