The San Diego Chargers have announced that last year’s TE breakout sensation Hunter Henry tore his ACL in OTA’s on Tuesday and will require season ending knee surgery. Henry, a high round draft pick out of Arkansas has caught 14 touchdown passes in his first two seasons and is an excellent blocker. Last year, he made 45 catches (on 63 targets) good for 579 yards and four touchdowns. Henry’s emergence had led the Bolts to not re-sign future Hall of Fame TE Antonio Gates.
Gates will likely be asked back at this point to play a 16th season. The one-time Kent State power forward has career numbers of 927 catches for 11, 508 yards. His 114 catches for touchdowns is the most in NFL history. The Chargers signed TE Virgil Green in the off season but Green is generally considered a blocking H-back type and has only 71 catches for 807 yards in seven seasons, all in Denver. Other options would be Coby Fleener, Julius Thomas, and hard and Marcedes Lewis with all being, unrestricted free agents.
